Alpha Legion!

HAIL HYDRA!

Well, erhem, not exactly... Macca here, and today I bring you an army I have been doing some commission work on, an Alpha Legion army! Now it's not all finished yet, AND the guy who owns it helped paint it with me, as I used the army as a tutorial for him to learn some basics of airbrushing on. Shout out to Deano!

I built a custom 'Exodus' the sniper character from Book III for the army, and he wears slightly darker versions of the Alpha armour. There isn't anything special about him, as he is a freebie I have thrown in for my mate just so we could use the guy in games!

Now I know Rhinos are not that popular in 6th, but we couldn't resist kitting a few up with hunter killers.

I really went to town on these rhinos, fully painting the interiors, as well as unit numbers being applied to the inner hatches, caution stripes on the ramps, rust damage on the floors, walls and ramp.

This army was actually begun around the time Book II arrived, and was done around Christmas, for the most part. The Hydra symbol is from 40k, we decided to keep it as opposed to the high-contrast white Hydra as the subdued Hydra says something subtly about subversion and stealth, to us anyway.

Also visible are the unit markings on the right knee.

Now the army wouldn't be any fun without some kind of high-speed anti armour.... so we built 3 speeders. (I still have 3 more to do)

Each speeder comes with converted Heresy era crew.

The bases are all provided by Secret Weapon Miniatures, and as always, are of a fantastic quality.

Lastly, we come to the case. I had this case custom built by the lads at Laser Touch, based here in Melbourne Australia. These guys do amazing work, and I am so happy that I'm giving them a sly plug right here.

The case is designed to hold the entire army and the units I have yet to complete (lots of recon marines), and even has custom unit names traced into the surface.

Alpha 6, 7 and 8 are the Rhinos.

So that's all for now. If you liked this army, let me know, I am considering doing more commissions, although I have had massive troubles with my varnish supplier lately and it has slowed everything I do right down.

Take care,

~Macca

  1. Can you possibly give a break down of units? I'm looking to put together a 1000pt heresy army over the summer and I'm trying to get ideas as what to put into it (eg characters, troops but not looking for points values i've ordered the crusade book)

    1. We have run them as 2 Tac Squads, 1 Veteran Squad (depending on if we used the Veteran Rite of War) 3 veteran squads, or 2 veteran and one headhunter/seek squad. The HQ is one of a pair that have magnetic arms and a magnetic pack, so we can quickly tailor a new HQ as required. Exodus is.... well, Exodus, the Rhinos mount hunter killers in their turrets, for that snap anti-tank, and the speeders are usually in singles or pairs, until the next 3 are done, and they run with multi-melta and Havoc launcher combos as they have a decent splash damage rate on infantry. Hunter killers optional on the speeders.

    1. High contrast using Stegadon Scale Green with Temple Guard Blue.

  3. Look superb, much prefer the color scheme to the FW one. A break down of the colors used would be much appreciated.

    1. As said to Somewhatdamaged, it's a high contrast using Stegadon Scale Green with Temple Guard Blue. the metallic work is all GW chainmail, and the weathering is done with a dusting of rotting flesh, as it tints nicely on blues and greys.

  4. Very is nice Macca, YOU MUST BE VERY PROUD OF YOURSELF

This ist not a Legionary force however as heavy weapons on tactical squads put lie to this.

As for bed roll on snipers backpack least we say about this as possible eh? :)

    1. Hahaha, well, it was designed to be 30/40k compatible, and since we were using the Veteran Rite of War, we could run the squads as 3 scoring veteran squads with missile with suspensor webs. The bedroll is supposed to be a rolled up camo cloak as he is Exodus/Vigilator and it's in his wargear, (WYSIWYG and all). Am I very proud of myself... hmm, well, I'm happy that they are what Deano wants, but as they have that higher contrast they look visually more impressive then my beloved Raven Guard.... which is depressing.... so very depressing

Thanks for the feedback Anon, I hope this clears up how this force is Heresy!

    2. Ya thanks MACCA your explanations are justified.

This Deano friend is lucky to have a good friend in yourself.

Do you think you will paint a more aggressive force next in line?

    3. I'd love to do something more aggressive, we are planning on converting up some Laernean Terminators if we can get the bits together and a Sicarian and a Sicarian Venator. This will give Deano a sizable Heresy force. I don't have any other commission work on at the moment, but I would love to, the worst part is making things fit in to my schedule.

  5. Looks the tits mate - the colour scheme is bang on - and the subtle legion symbol is very effective - not ostentatious or over the top.

The selling point for me is the hazard stripes - well executed hazard stripes do it every time. The spots you've chosen for them also make sense - again, one of those things that helps sell it on that scale.

Be proud of yourself Macca - its a good looking force.

    1. Cheers mate! Yeah, we really were wondering about the Hydra blending too much, but in the end we were able to keep it visible enough to pull off what we wanted. Deano wasn't convinced on the hazard stripes either until I painted them. I find that they are a fun way to add a tiny bit of extra colour to the army and help to break up the power armour. Where people go wrong is they use it all over the shop. If we do the Sicarians like I am hoping for this force, I will likely do the exhaust housing in hazards just to keep that theme of hazards on vehicles going.

Thanks for the very positive feedback!

  6. Mind if ask how you made the Serpent head on the helmet of your Sniper? I am looking to do something similar for a special helm but i cannot find any bits with tiny serpent heads

    1. I used a part of a Dark Elf Corsair from Fantasy, and just filed it slowly to suit.
