Mechanicum Krios Venator and Thallax Test

Macca here with a tiny blog update.

Over the weekend, the chaps played in the 'Like a Sir' 30k Tournament. There are some great happy snaps and some videos floating around, go check them out over at the Traitors Hand here.

Anyway, whilst the lads were at that, 3200 KM away, I was busy working on this bad boy (as well as screaming at the fail-tacular Roosters and laughing at the Swans in the footy). Thus, the first complete unit has been built for my new Mechanicum side project. I'm not set on the colours or markings yet, but the theme is all about the survivors of Calleb Decima's small loyalist Mechanicum contingent. I wanted to stay away from the typical reds and metallics of the Mechanicum, and instead I have focused on a very worn and ashen colour scheme.

As well as the Krios, I also did a couple of Thallax up with multi-meltas, because, reasons.

That's all for now, check back soon as I believe Wadey actually has ANOTHER post to go up.

  1. An awesome colour choice Macca - you have nailed the real world worn metal/pain look.

Not as sure about the Thallax - any way you could work more of that copper look in from the Krios - the grey on the Thallax is quite dominating - although the angles might not be helping - I keep getting stuck on the middle dude in the last picture - just a lot of grey with the gloss black being the only real standout - the other metal colours are heavily muted.

The heat effect on the Meltas and thruster nozzles is cool though.

    1. Cheers mate. Yeah, it is one of those 'um' and 'uh' moments where I worry about the colour. However in real life, the legs, arms etc are all a sorta bronzed colour, the angles don't do them true justice, but I am hoping when I put up a big Thallax group shot it will work better. You're definitely not alone in thinking about the plain-ness lol

  2. Nice job on the worn metal look, especially on the gun shield and rear of the cockpit. Did you spounge or use the salt and hair spray technique? I really like the realistic look.

    1. Ah, it's a super special formula.... there is hairspray, there isn't any salt, nor is there any sponging. Basically, I paint the model with my top coat, and actually peel paint off in miniature. It's a different method which I am trying in order to get a much more realistic look. I'm glad you like it mate, at the moment it's not quite there still, but will be soon.

I saw a certain yellow army that did quite well on the weekend...

  3. Great idea, I might have to try it out on my next project!
Thanks, my fists went pretty hard and did fantastically. The stone gauntlet is a great rite.
I'll get keepy's robo men next time!

    1. Keepy's robo men are powered by cheese, and protected by shields made from the tears of everyone he has ever beaten. You are right about the Stone Gauntlet, it is one of the more viable Rites of War. The Alpha Legion one can lose you games, and the Sons of Horus one is shrug worthy.

  4. I wasn't going to add vehicles to my Mechanicum army... However, I think you might have just persuaded me of their merits!

    1. Yes, YES feel the warp overtaking you.... well, a desire to add tanks. The Krios is a good kit, I found it easier then the Sicarian to put together. I chose the Venator, because I wanted that big siege shield, but the standard Lightning Cannon is insanely good against power armour. All in a package a tad larger then a Predator.

    2. Same here, i'm trying to focus on Knights with just Mechanicum support but those vehicles just look so nice.

Those Thallax look good, I was originally going to go for a grey on my Ordo Reductor too!

Hopefully you make it to the next event, Orktoberfest in Brisbane is coming up at the end of October...

    1. I wish! End of October I have Armies on Parade, aka wine country with the Mrs with a sprinkling of hobby en route. I am actually saving money for my Fiji holiday at Chrissy time, so it limits the travel I can do.. Next year however, I can't wait to sink my fangs into the tournament scene for 30k.

Nice Krios, is that a Macharius in the back?

  6. Yeah the scene is really taking off, there should be some good events next year!

You're close! It's the tracks from a Praetor Armoured Assault Launcher! (they're possibly the same tracks?) It's next up on my schedule, along with a Thanatar and a second Mechanicum LR.

    1. Yeah sick. I'm still waiting on a pair of Thanatar and a heap of Thallax to arrive. Having Calleb Decima's force means getting to have fun with loyalist shenanigans haha

  7. Are you doing a conversion up for Decima?

I've been holding out hoping they'd drop a model for him but it doesn't look that way..

    1. Nope. I looked, and they suggest the very model I was thinking of, the Titan Tech Priest. He looks just like the pic of Decima, so I figure, a top notch paint job and I'm set!
